Anyaso tells investors chase trust not population size at UNGA 81. Bende Federal Constituency hopeful, Dr. Chimaobi Desmond Anyaso, delivered the message in New York on Wednesday. He spoke to international investors and policymakers at a global forum.
Anyaso is the Labour Party candidate for Bende Federal Constituency in the 2027 National Assembly election. He addressed the Global Reputation Forum side event of UNGA 81. The theme was “Beyond Borders, Building Prosperity That Lasts: The Sustainable Development Agenda.”
The event gathered diplomats, business leaders and development partners. The UNGA 81 High-Level Week runs from September 22 to 28. Its central theme is restoring global trust.
Capital Moves Towards Trust, Not Just Opportunity
Anyaso built his business in oil and gas before venturing into politics. He argued that Africa must change its pitch to the world. According to him, the era of selling only population size is over.
He said investors no longer move on opportunity alone. Instead, they move towards opportunity they can understand and protect. Therefore, credibility now matters more than market size.
“Capital does not move only towards opportunity. It moves towards opportunity that investors believe they can understand, protect and eventually realize,” Anyaso told the gathering.
He said many African entrepreneurs make a costly mistake. They pitch market size instead of credibility. However, serious investors ask deeper questions before committing funds.

According to him, investors always ask: Who is this person? What has he done before? How has he managed other people’s money? Consequently, trust becomes the real currency for global capital.
How I Secured $10 Million From A Modest Office
To drive the point home, Anyaso shared his personal business story. He recalled 2006 when he operated from a modest office. At that time, he secured his first major institutional facility.
It was a $10 million bank loan. The loan did not come because of the office look. Instead, it came because of his financial history and track record.
“It wasn’t because of the look of my office. It was because of my financial history. In oil and gas, you manage people’s funds. Banks checked my records, saw how money moved, and saw that obligations were met,” he said.
He stressed that reputation with banks determines global deals. Foreign investors often run background checks through financial institutions. Therefore, a bad record with banks kills international opportunities silently.
“If your bank cannot vouch for you, no foreign investor will,” he warned.
First Trust Test Is Hardest, Then Doors Open
Anyaso also recounted his experience buying his first house in the United Kingdom. The process dragged for almost a year. The delay was due to rigorous Know Your Customer, KYC, checks.
However, once he passed the initial trust test, subsequent transactions became seamless. According to him, that is how the global system works. The first barrier is the hardest. After that, reputation becomes a passport.
Bende And Nigeria Must Build Reputation As Asset
He concluded that Nigeria must intentionally build reputation as an asset. The same applies to constituencies like Bende. Leaders must demonstrate accountability and capacity to manage resources. In addition, they must honour agreements consistently.
He said sustainable investment will only come when trust is verifiable. Therefore, leaders must show a track record, not just potential.
