UGWUEKE, BENDE LGA — It was a sombre atmosphere in Ugwueke on Saturday as the Chima Anyaso Campaign Council set aside politicking to identify with victims of the devastating flood that ravaged four autonomous communities.
The delegation, led by the Director-General of the Chima Anyaso Campaign Organization, Pastor Dike Okechukwu, toured the affected communities to assess the level of destruction and convey a message of solidarity from the Labour Party candidate for Bende Federal Constituency, Dr. Chima Desmond Anyaso.
Ugwueke has been in distress since the torrential downpour that submerged homes, washed away farmlands, destroyed businesses and displaced hundreds of residents. The disaster claimed the life of a 37-year-old trader, Mr. Ejiuwa, who was reportedly swept away while returning from the market.
In Amaokai, Tears for Ejiuwa
The first port of call was Amaokai Autonomous Community, home of the late Mr. Ejiuwa. The team visited the bereaved family, commiserated with them and prayed for fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
The mood remained heavy as the council moved to Etiti Autonomous Community, where they met face-to-face with families who lost houses, shops and investments. They inspected collapsed buildings and listened as victims narrated how years of labour were washed away in hours.
In Ndelu Autonomous Community, the delegation was received by Chief Paul Okorie, former Manager of Golden Guinea Nigeria Plc. After inspecting affected areas, the team expressed deep sympathy to residents whose livelihoods were shattered.
The tour ended at Amaeze Autonomous Community, where more victims were met and more damage was documented.
“Your Pain Is Our Pain” – Anyaso Campaign
Speaking on behalf of the candidate, Pastor Okechukwu said the visit was beyond politics, stressing that leadership must show up in difficult times.
“We want the families and communities affected by this unfortunate disaster to know that they are not alone. We share in your grief. We understand the pain of losing a loved one and the trauma of losing homes and investments built through years of sacrifice.
“Don’t lose hope because of what has happened. The Labour Party will continue to stand by the people of Ugwueke, not only in moments of celebration but also in difficult times like this. Your pain is our pain, and we will continue to identify with you as you rebuild,” he said.
He conveyed the personal condolences and prayers of Dr. Chima Anyaso to the bereaved family and all affected families.
Also on the delegation were the Deputy Mayor of Bende LGA, Hon. Mrs. Ngozi Sandra Anya; Chairman of the Campaign Advisory Board, Ezeogo Emeka Onuoha; Councilor representing Ugwueke/Ezeukwu Ward, Hon. Chukwu Chidiebere Udeh, and other Directors of the Campaign Council.
