NDAF Wants ECTDA, Other Agencies’ Intervention on Ongoing Construction in Nsukka
The Nsukka Democratic Awareness Forum (NDAF) has called on the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA) and other relevant bodies in the state to halt the ongoing distortions caused by an ongoing building construction at Opi Junction, in Nsukka area of Enugu state.
In a statement issued by the Secretary General of the forum, Comrade James Ezema, the coalition queried the rationale behind the construction of what looks like a plaza on the expressway without recourse to approval by relevant authorities.
The Forum commended the efforts of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi administration and the tireless labour of the ECTDA to not only restore the master plan of Enugu but also to create new cities to decongest the capital, saying that “every Enugu citizen working against this noble plan is a saboteur that must be treated as such no matter how highly placed.
“Our findings revealed that there is no approval for the ongoing construction, which will in the near future, due to its location, cause multiple accidents if the plaza is allowed to be situated as it is being constructed.
“The Forum’s findings at both Nsukka East Development Centre and the Nsukka Local Government Area show that there were no approvals at either of the council before the commencement of construction work and even now.
“We also gathered that the petitions have been forwarded to local government and relevant state authorities by some individuals in the town, alerting the authorities of the danger posed by citing of a plaza or lock up shops too close to the expressway.
“We have been reliably gathered that when the construction was resisted by the locals, in connivance with the former Nsukka local government caretaker committee chairperson, Chinwe Ugwu, armed thugs were mobilized to the site and construction continued both day and night till date.
“The primary duty of government is to save lives and properties. We therefore strongly call on the Enugu State Government and all relevant agencies to immediately swing into action to avert a catastrophe waiting to happen if the ongoing building construction is not halted immediately”, the forum stated.
