ENUGU, NIGERIA — The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ikeje Asogwa, has emerged victorious in the Enugu North Senatorial District by-election, securing an overwhelming mandate from voters across the zone.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officially declared Asogwa winner of the poll after he garnered 162,360 votes, far ahead of his closest challenger, Nestor Ezeme of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who polled 9,299 votes.
The by-election was conducted to fill the vacant Enugu North Senate seat following the death of former senator Okey Ezea in November 2025. Ezea, who represented the district in the National Assembly, was elected on the platform of the Labour Party.
Announcing the results on Sunday, the Returning Officer, Prof. Christian Ezeibe of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), stated that Asogwa met all constitutional and electoral requirements to be returned as senator-elect.
“Having satisfied the requirements of the law and scored the highest number of valid votes cast, Ikeje Asogwa is hereby declared the winner and returned elected,” Ezeibe announced.
According to INEC, the Enugu North Senatorial District had a total of 727,340 registered voters, while 184,094 voters were accredited to participate in the by-election.
The final results showed a significant gap between the APC candidate and other contestants. Okwudiri Ossai of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) finished third with 3,129 votes, while Chika Idoko of the African Democratic Party (ADP) secured 1,676 votes to place fourth.
In his acceptance speech, Asogwa described the outcome as a collective victory for the people of the six local government areas that make up the Enugu North Senatorial District.
The senator-elect expressed gratitude to voters for their confidence in his candidacy and pledged to deliver purposeful and effective representation at the National Assembly.
He assured constituents that he would work diligently to address the developmental needs of the district and justify the overwhelming support received at the polls.
The APC’s commanding performance in the by-election is being viewed by political observers as a major boost for the ruling party in Enugu State, traditionally regarded as a stronghold of opposition parties.
