2019: PDP Rebuilds Party, Begins Search for Credible Leadership
In what seems like a holistic move to rebuild the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of 2019 elections, chieftains of the party have adopted far reaching resolutions to that effect.
The party’s bigwigs, including serving and former officeholders have resolved to discard its longstanding zoning principle in the election of a new national chairman of the party.
Her serving and former Governors, Senators, House of Representatives members, Ministers, among other stalwarts of the party at the end of a meeting in Lagos State resolved that the principle of zoning would be adopted only after a formidable new national chairman with weight and integrity has emerged.
The stakeholders of the PDP met at the Eko Hotel and Suites. The meeting was hosted by the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, who is the highest elected officeholder on the PDP platform.
According to the stakeholders, the party would zone positions at the emergence of a new national chairman of the party at her forthcoming national convention.
At the meeting the party established a committee to search for a formidable and credible national chairman in collaboration with the leadership of the PDP Governors Forum.
As part of efforts to deal with what the party described as persecution by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), constituted another committee to prepare a response to attacks on the PDP by APC.
The stakeholders’ meeting was attended former governor of Cross River State, Mr. Donald Duke, who was making a presence at a national PDP stakeholders meeting for the first time in about eight years and all the party caucuses.
While Senator Ekweremadu led his colleagues in the Senators to the meeting, Hon. Leo Ogor led the caucus of the party in the House of Representatives.
The Governors’ caucus was led by chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, Governor Olusegun Mimiko. Other governors at the meeting include Governors Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State, Dairus Ishaku of Taraba, Ibrahim Damkwambo of Gombe.
Also present was the Deputy Governor of Delta State, Kingsley Otaru, among other stakeholders.
