Businessman Jailed 6 Years for Fraud, N1.5m Theft

An Ebute-metta Chief Magistrate’s Court,  on Friday, sentenced a businessman, Samuel Nnamdi Nzewo, to six years imprisonment for obtaining money under false pretences and stealing.

The court presided over by Chief Magistrate O. I. Adelaja (Mrs.), sentenced the convict a jail term of six years after finding him guilty of the two-count charges of obtaining money under false pretence and stealing leveled against him by the police.

In the charge marked B/114c/2005, the police stated that the convict collected the sum of N1, 550, 000 million, from one Sir Eugene Mba under the pretence that he has a plot of land to sell to him in 2002.

The offences according to the prosecutor, Inspector Chinalu Uwadione are punishable under sections 419 and 390(9) of the Criminal code Cap 17, Vol 11, Laws of Lagos state of Nigeria, 2003.

The convict, a native Udemili south local government of Anambra state, had pleaded not guilty to the charges, and admitted to bail by the court.

During the trial of the case, while being cross-examined, the convict had admitted that he collected the said sum from the victim on two thresh. He said the victim first gave him that sum of N1,490,000, which he said he is to assist the victim in importing empty Compact Disk (CD) from Singapore.

He stated further that when he could not supply the CD as promised, he told the victim to add N50,000, to the money with the promise of giving him a plot of land around Ojo area of Lagos.

He said the N50,000,was for the perimeter fence of the supposed land.

Sentencing the convict on Friday, Chief magistrate Adelaja held that the prosecution has been able to prove the charges of obtaining money under false pretence and stealing against the convict as charged by the police, beyond reasonable doubt.
