Illicit Drugs: Senegalese Woman Jailed 4yrs

A Lagos Federal High Court, on Monday, sentenced a 43 year old Senegalese woman, Sall Fatou the act four years-jail term over drug trafficking.

The convict, who is from the Senegal capital, Dakar, according to the anti-drugs agency, the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, was arrested on December 4, 2015, with 151.6 grammes of cocaine and 151.1 grammes of heroine, at the Seme Border Control Post, Seme.

After her arrest, she was consequently, araigned before Justice Saliu Saidu led-court on a count charge which she pleaded ‘not guilty’ to, but later changed her plea to ‘guilty’.

The NDLEA prosecutor, Mr. Jerry Aernan, while reviewing the facts case on Monday, tendered the seized drugs, the arrest officer’s statement, witnessing officer statement, the convict’s confessional statement, certificate of taste analysis, packing of substance form, request for scientific aid, search endorsement form, asset declaration form, finger print form, criminal record form, photocopy of international passport of the convict and national ID card of the suspect among as exhibits which were admitted by the court.

The prosecutor had informed the court that the offence contrary to and punishable under Section 11(b) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Act, Cap No 30 laws of the federation, 2004.

Upon the tendering and admitting the exhibits, the NDLEA prosecutor urged the court to sentence her in accordance to the law.

Lawyer to the convict, Mr. Emeka Okpara,in his allocutor, pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy while sentencing the convict.

Emeka informed the court that the Senegalese convict, is a first offender, and has no previous criminal record. He also informed the court that the convict a special health condition, thrash make it mandatory for her to bath only with water from Dakar sea and BarBeach sea water.

Emeka also informed the court that the convict is a single parent, with a tender child who is currently suffering as a result of convict’s arrest and detention.

However, the presiding judge, Justice Saidu Saliu while delivering judgment in the criminal case held that: “I have seen and listened carefully to the facts presented, and the mercy plea made by the convict’s lawyer, and I hereby sentence convict to four years imprisonment on count one and four years on count two.

The sentence term are to run concurrently beginning form the date of judgment.
