EFCC To Collaborate With ALGON To Train Council Officials On Anti-corruption, Transparency
In a bid to strengthen the fight against corruption in the country, the Economic And Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is to collaborate with the Association Of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in deepening transparency and accountability in the third tier of government, the local governments and area councils, in the country.
The training was initiated by a nongovernmental organisation (NGO), the Iykon Global Foundation.
Briefing journalists at a press conference at the ALGON headquarters, the Program Consultant and Executive Director of the foundation, High Chief Ephraim Iyke Nwonu disclosed that some of the participants include council chairmen, council secretaries, Heads of Personnel Management, council Auditors, Treasurers, and Speakers of the councils’ legislative arms from across the country.
He said, “Worried by the endemic consequences of corruption and transparency gap in both government and private sectors, and in keeping faith with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, in which fighting corruption and ensuring transparency is a priority, EFCC in collaboration with ALGON is conducting a training/sensitization workshop between 27th February — 7th March, 2024 at EFCC Training Academy, Karu, Abuja.
“The event focuses on transparency and accountability in governance at local level, with Local Government officials as key participants.
“The training will also enhance the preventive measures against corruption and financial crimes as well as inculcating international standard best practices among officials of the 3-tier of government, thereby deepening good governance at the grassroots”, he added.
The ALGON National President, Hon Alabi Kolade David, who represented a the press briefing by his Social Assistant on Administration, Chief Dimeji Lamuren, noted that for reasons of unallocated circumstances lack of transparency and corruption “have been the bane of where we are today.”
Hon. Alabi noted that he has been “an advocate of bottom-up approach to all issues, rather than top-down approach that has been ongoing; the grassroots is where it must begin.”
He maintained that if their must be change in attitude, the re-orientation has to begin from the bottom, applauding the EFCC through the consultant for identifying ALGON as partner in the forthcoming training workshop.
