The National President of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Bello Lawal, has called on Nigerians to embrace unity, compassion, and respect for the rule of law as Muslim faithful across the country celebrate Eid-el-Fitr, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
In a press statement issued in Abuja by the ALGON Media Office, Lawal extended warm felicitations to Muslims nationwide, describing Eid-el-Fitr as โa sacred occasionโ that reflects the enduring values of compassion, empathy, and selflessness.
โThis sacred occasion is a reminder of the enduring values of compassion, empathy, and selflessnessโprinciples exemplified by the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (SWT) and essential in building a stronger, more resilient Nigeria,โ he said.
The ALGON President noted that the country is currently facing significant challenges, including insecurity, hunger, banditry, and kidnapping, urging Nigerians to draw inspiration from the spiritual sacrifices observed during Ramadan.
โAt a time when communities continue to grapple with insecurity, hunger, banditry, and kidnapping, ALGON urges collective action inspired by the sacrifices of fasting, prayer, and charity during Ramadan,โ Lawal stated. โLet us channel this spirit, as taught by Prophet Muhammad (SWT), into forging a nation where every citizen can live in peace, dignity, and prosperity.โ
Lawal also expressed solidarity with victims of insecurity across the country, particularly families who have lost loved ones to violence. He offered prayers for comfort and eternal rest for the deceased.
โWe stand in solidarity with families and communities who have lost loved ones to violence and insecurity. We mourn with them, pray for their comfort, and ask Allah to grant the departed eternal rest in Aljanna Firdaus,โ he said.
On governance, the ALGON President linked the call for unity to the need for justice and adherence to the rule of law, referencing developments following the Supreme Court verdict on local government autonomy.
โThis call to unity is inseparable from our broader commitment to justice and good governance. ALGON acknowledges progress following the July 11, 2024 Supreme Court verdict, which has strengthened local government autonomy in some states,โ Lawal noted. โHowever, we remain concerned about uneven enforcement and urge all stakeholders to uphold the rule of law, ensuring fairness and equity for allโespecially for citizens at the grassroots level.โ
He emphasized that addressing Nigeriaโs development challenges must begin at the grassroots, stressing the critical role of local government administration in tackling insecurity and fostering sustainable growth.
โClosing the development gap must begin at the roots, in our rural communities. Strengthening local government administration is vital to tackling insecurity, as every crime and act of violence originates from one local government or another,โ he said. โALGON therefore calls for collective support in entrenching a viable local government system that empowers communities and fosters sustainable growth.โ
Lawal further expressed appreciation to Nigerians for their trust in ALGONโs efforts toward rural development and acknowledged the support of key stakeholders in governance.
โALGON deeply appreciates the trust and hope Nigerians place in our efforts toward innovative rural development,โ he stated. โWe extend gratitude to Bola Ahmed Tinubu, state governors, the judiciary, the legislature, and all stakeholders for their continued support of local governance.โ
He concluded with a call for collective national effort toward building a more united and prosperous country.
โTogether, let us build a Nigeria defined by unity, justice, and prosperity, guided by the values of Prophet Muhammad (SWT),โ Lawal said.
