A dramatic political signal ahead of the 2027 general elections emerged on as Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, declared that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is poised to dominate Abia State, vowing a clean sweep of the governorship, National Assembly, and State Assembly seats.
According to a statement signed by Levinus Nwabughiogu, the Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Speaker, the bold declaration came moments after a coalition of APC stakeholders from Abia State presented Kalu with Expression of Interest and Governorship Nomination Forms in Abuja, urging him to enter the race for the state’s top office.
Responding to the pressure, Kalu struck an optimistic tone, suggesting that momentum is building within the party and across the state.
“I want to thank you for bringing this form and assure you that at the end of the day, the story must change in Abia State,” he said. “We will work with the party to make sure that happens.”
In what many observers interpret as a strong indication of a looming governorship l1bid, Kalu emphasized the unprecedented level of political interest within the APC in Abia, describing it as a sign of growing confidence in the party’s ideology and leadership.
“It has never happened before that the party has received this level of interest—from House of Assembly to House of Representatives, to the Senate and governorship. It shows that people are beginning to understand what APC stands for,” he added.
Doubling down on his projections, the Deputy Speaker issued a sweeping electoral forecast: “We will not allow this dream to die. We will fight till the end. We will win the House of Assembly positions, win the House of Representatives, sweep the Senate seats, and take the governorship.”
However, Kalu made it clear that beyond state-level ambitions, his primary political objective remains delivering Abia—and the wider South-East—for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid.
“The most important thing for me is to ensure that this reformer, who has come to leave lasting legacies, receives visible support from our people. Every other thing is secondary,” he said.
Earlier, prominent APC figures from the three senatorial zones of Abia took turns to heap praise on Kalu’s leadership and legislative record, insisting he is best positioned to lead the party to victory in 2027.
Chief James Uko Igwe, SAN, speaking for Abia North, described Kalu as a statesman whose impact at the national level should now be replicated at the state level.
“There is no better time than now,” Igwe said. “The marks you have made nationally, we want them in Abia State.”
From Abia Central, retired Major General Jack Nwaogbu credited Kalu with revitalizing the APC in the state, noting a resurgence in grassroots participation and unity within party ranks.
“The person who has united politicians and returned the party to the masses should take up the mantle of governance,” he stated.
Meanwhile, former Deputy Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Uzo Azubuike, representing Abia South stakeholders, warned of political risks if the region fails to deliver stronger support for President Tinubu in 2027.
“We need a leader who can mobilize massive votes and secure our place in national politics,” Azubuike said. “We are convinced that Kalu is that leader.”
The development marks a significant turning point in Abia’s political landscape, with growing speculation that Kalu’s eventual decision could reshape the contest ahead of 2027. For now, the message from Abuja is unmistakable: the APC is gearing up for an all-out battle—and Kalu may be at the center of it.
