ABUJA, NIGERIA — Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has called for fairness, transparency and strict adherence to the rule of law in the treatment of former Nasir El-Rufai, warning that perceived selective justice could undermine public confidence and threaten national unity.
Obi made the appeal after watching a viral video of El-Rufai’s wife, Hajiya Asiya El-Rufai, in which she became emotional over what she described as the treatment of her husband.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by Peter Obi Media Reach and signed by its spokesman, Idris Zekeri Jnr, Obi said he was deeply touched by the video while attending an event in the United States.
The former Anambra State governor, writing on his X account under the title, “A Wife’s Tears, A Nation’s Conscience: Let Justice Have a Heart,” stressed that justice must be administered fairly to every Nigerian, irrespective of status or political affiliation.
“I woke this morning in America and was deeply moved by an emotional viral video of Hajiya Asiya El-Rufai, prompting deep reflection on our nation’s future,” Obi stated.
He maintained that regardless of the allegations against El-Rufai or any other citizen, the judicial process must remain transparent, while bail conditions should be reasonable and not appear punitive before trial.
Obi further argued that democratic institutions exist to safeguard the rights of all citizens, insisting that the rule of law remains the bedrock of a functional democracy.
The opposition leader cautioned against any perception of selective justice, saying such actions could erode public trust in state institutions and weaken national cohesion.
“We must resist any hint of selective justice that erodes public trust and threatens national unity. Those tasked with enforcing our laws must act professionally and strictly follow due process,” he said.
Reaffirming his vision for a better Nigeria, Obi called on public institutions to uphold justice, fairness and human dignity in all circumstances.
“Let us strive for a Nigeria where the law is paramount, and where every citizen is guaranteed dignity and justice. This is the foundation of the New Nigeria we envisage,” he added.
The statement underscores growing calls from opposition figures for greater respect for constitutional rights, due process and equal application of the law as political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections continue to gather momentum.
