Ondo Women Protest Half-Naked Against Herdsmen Attacks, Demand Justice for Victims
In the wake of sustained attacks, Women in Ondo State, Nigeria, have taken to the streets to protest against the incessant attacks by suspected herdsmen in their communities.
The Street Reporters Newspaper reports that in a bold and daring move, the women went half-naked to express their grievances and demand justice for the victims of the attacks.
The protest came after a 34-year-old farmer, Sunday Ayeni, was killed by suspected herdsmen in Uba-Oka Akoko, a community in Ondo State.
The attack is the latest in a series of violent incidents perpetrated by suspected herdsmen in the state, leaving many dead and several others injured.
The women, who were mostly farmers and traders, marched through the streets of Akure, the state capital, carrying placards and chanting slogans. They demanded an end to the herdsmen attacks and justice for the victims.
“We are tired of living in fear,” said one of the protesters, who identified herself as Mrs. Funmi. “We can’t go to our farms anymore because of the herdsmen. They kill our people, destroy our crops, and rape our women. We want the government to take action.”
The protesters also called on the state government to take responsibility for the security of its citizens.
“The government has failed us,” said another protester, Mrs. Abigail. “They have not done enough to protect us from these herdsmen. We want them to take action now.”
The half-naked protest is a traditional form of protest in Nigeria, where women strip half-naked to express their grievances and shame their oppressors. It is a powerful symbol of resistance and defiance, believed to heap a curse on the oppressors.
The Ondo State government has promised to take action against the herdsmen, but the women are skeptical. “We have heard promises before, but nothing has changed,” said Mrs. Funmi. “We want action, not promises.”
The protest has drawn attention to the plight of the people of Ondo State, who have suffered at the hands of herdsmen for years. It has also sparked a national conversation about the need for security and justice in Nigeria.
