Kwara State Embarks on Ambitious Tree Planting Initiative to Combat Climate Change
Kwara State has launched an ambitious tree planting initiative, aimed at combating climate change and promoting environmental sustainability. The Universal Climate Initiative (UCI), championed by Abral Development Initiative, seeks to plant 160,000 trees across all local government areas in the state.
According to Governor Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq, who flagged off the initiative, “We are not merely planting trees today; we are, in effect, planting hope. Each tree represents our collective commitment to nurturing our ecosystem and preserving the natural heritage of Kwara State.”
Governor AbdulRazaq, represented by the state Commissioner for Environment, Hajia Nafisat Musa Buge, expressed his confidence that the UCI will have a lasting positive impact on the state’s forests and empower communities through the introduction of energy-saving stoves and support for locally produced components.
On her part, the Commissioner for Environment, Hajiya Musa Nafisatu Buge, emphasized the importance of trees in combating climate change and preserving biodiversity. “Trees are the lungs of our planet. They absorb carbon dioxide, release oxygen, and provide habitat for countless species,” she said.
She appreciated the Chairman and President of Abral Development Initiative, Mr. Opeyemi AbdulHafiz Alao, for spearheading the initiative and setting a remarkable example for environmental conservation.
The initiative is part of the state government’s efforts to promote environmental sustainability and address climate change. The government has also reacted forests through the Agro-Climatic Resilience in semi-Arid landscape (ACReSAL) project, urban green spaces at the remodeled Flower garden in Ilorin, and other interventions aimed at controlling erosion and ensuring a cleaner Kwara.
The Street Reporters Newspaper reports that the successful launch of the UCI is a proof of the state government’s commitment to partnership and collaboration in promoting environmental sustainability.
As Governor AbdulRazaq noted, “It is our shared responsibility to take ownership of both government-driven and community-driven initiatives like this one. By doing so, we contribute to a healthier planet and a thriving society.”
