Senate Begins Ministerial Nominees’ Confirmation, Refuses to Uphold ‘Bow and Go’ Tradition

The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on Tuesday began confirmation of Ministerial nominees against its tradition of ‘bow and go’ for those who have served in legislative capacity before their nomination for ministerial appointment.

At the plenary is the Senate Leader, Ali Ndume who moved the motion for the exercise said: “That the Senate do consider the request of Mr President, Commander-In-Chief for the confirmation of the following nominees for appointments as Ministers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, in accordance with Section 147 (2) of 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended,” he submitted.

Senator Udoma Udo Udoma a lawyer who served in 2nd and 3rd Senate was the first to face rigorous screening.

Second on the list in an ongoing confirmation are Dr John Kayode Fayemi who has been screened.

The former Governor of Ekiti State was asked to be take a bow after being drilled for about to 47 minutes by the Senate.

Questions about the debt burden he left for Ekiti State as Governor were thrown at him as well as how he went about running the outlawed Radio Kudirat through unconventional borders and the huge amount he spent in building and furnishing the state’s Government House in Ado Ekiti.

He denied spending money irresponsibly on the project, which he said was actually among the cheapest in the country.

He was also asked what he had to say about the challenges in the nation’s education system of which he noted that enrolment, particularly in the North was still a problem bedeviling the sector.

He stated that the National Universities Commission (NUC) cannot regulate and operate at the same time, adding that, “We need to look at our curriculum, we need to look at teachers’ quality. We need to make public education attractive.”

He was also tasked on what he feels can be done about reforms in the nation’s foreign policy, poverty eradication, revenue generation for the government and his plans for the security of the nation.

On the Order Paper which is the official agenda of business of Senate shows that the Senate could only confirm 10 nominees out of 21 of the first batch forwarded to it by President Muhammadu Buhari last month on Tuesday.
