Kwara State Government has allegedly facilitated the arrest of four journalists within 24 hours, leading to their remand in custody by a Magistrate Court.
The Police on Thursday arrested Publisher Fresh Insight, Abdulrasheed Akogun Shoboi and Dare Akogun of Sobi FM over allegation of defamation against the two blood brothers by the Chief Press Secretary to Kwara Governor, Rafiu Ajakaye.
The duo reportedly honored Police invitation to clarify issues raised in petition written by Rafiu Ajakaye but were detained for refusing to write apology letter on advise of Commissioner of Police in Kwara State, CP Paul Odama.
Following the arrest, the Association of Kwara Online Media Practitioners (ASKOMP) and some youths staged a peaceful protest at Police Headquarters, Ilorin to demand for immediate release of Abdulrasheed and Dare Akogun.
It was alleged that the Kwara Police Public Relations Officer, SP Okasanmi Ajayi directed officers to arrest peaceful protesters.
ASKOMP accused the officers of using live ammunition to disrupt the peaceful protest.
It was gathered that the police later arrested Editor-in-Chief of Fresh Insight, Ibrahim Sheriff and another journalist, Ajadi Ridwan Hajard.
The arrested journalists were on Friday arraigned before a Magistrate Court in Ilorin for trial and subsequently remanded.
