A shocking controversy has erupted at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Academy in Obudu, Cross River State, after a 9-year-old student in JSS1 was assigned homework to define homosexuality, lesbianism, and gayism.

Human rights activist and investigative journalist, Agba Jalingo, exposed the incident, expressing outrage and concern for the well-being of the children.

He questioned in a social media post: “What is the meaning of this? A 9-year-old child in JSS1, is given homework to define homosexuality, lesbianism, and gayism, which the teacher couldn’t even spell well on the board for them to copy?”

According to Jalingo, the teacher responsible for assigning the homework, Seminarian Francis Ushie from Bekwarra, claimed it was part of the curriculum and aimed to teach the students about the “wrong use of marriage.”Rights Activists Slam Obudu Catholic Academy Over Explicit Homework

However, Jalingo argued, “What have under tens got to do with marriage?”

Jalingo emphasised the importance of protecting children from inappropriate content, stating, “We must be careful what we allow children to consume from care givers.”

He disclosed that he has reported the incident to the State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Stephen Odey, and is awaiting action.

“This is unacceptable and potentially harmful to the children’s emotional and psychological development,” Jalingo stressed. “I want to see that curriculum. What textbook recommends exposing children under ten to such sensitive topics?”

The incident has sparked concerns about the suitability of the curriculum and the potential harm it may cause to young students.
