Barely 24 hours after his court-ordered release from wrongful detention, 17-year-old Quadri Yusuf Alabi and his family now face fresh threats to their safety, prompting a public call for urgent financial assistance to support their relocation and rehabilitation.
Quadri, who recently gained national attention after enduring three months of unlawful incarceration in Kirikiri Prison on trumped-up armed robbery charges, is now at risk of further victimization in his Amukoko community, Lagos State.
His lawyer, prominent human rights advocate Inibehe Effiong, announced an emergency fundraising appeal on Thursday to secure Quadri’s future and ensure the family’s immediate protection.
According to Effiong, the decision to appeal to the public was made after consultations with Quadri’s family, who reported receiving new threats as recently as Thursday morning. These threats, reportedly from the same individuals and groups who orchestrated his initial ordeal, have made it unsafe for Quadri and his family to return to their residence.
“Amukoko is no longer safe for them,” Effiong stated. “Those behind his travails can easily target him or his family members again. Due to the urgency and severity of the situation, we have secured temporary accommodation for them in a hotel for tonight.”
The fundraising campaign seeks to accomplish three urgent objectives:
Relocation: Immediate financial support is needed to help the family move out of Amukoko to a safer environment.
Family Support: Quadri’s widowed mother, a petty trader, is in dire need of assistance to sustain herself and her children.
Rehabilitation and Education: Quadri has expressed a strong desire to return to school or acquire a vocational skill, requiring long-term investment in his personal development.
Effiong emphasized that transparency and accountability would guide the management of all funds received, promising that donations would be properly utilized for the intended purposes.
Individuals and organizations willing to support Quadri are encouraged to send contributions to the following account:
Account Name: Quadri Yusuf Alabi
Account Number: 0092695127
Bank: Sterling Bank
“This is not just about helping a boy who survived a miscarriage of justice,” Effiong added. “It is about giving him a real chance at life — away from the dangers that nearly cost him his freedom.”
Background
Quadri’s case has ignited widespread outrage across Nigeria after it was revealed that he was wrongfully detained based on false accusations concocted by local thugs and facilitated by corrupt police officers. His release came after the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) found no evidence to support the charges against him.
The ordeal has drawn attention to systemic failures within Nigeria’s policing and justice sectors, highlighting the urgent need for reforms to protect vulnerable citizens.
For now, the immediate focus is on ensuring Quadri’s safety and creating an environment where he can heal, rebuild, and pursue his aspirations.
Effiong concluded with a passionate appeal: “Quadri has shown resilience in the face of unimaginable injustice. It is now our collective responsibility to ensure he is not abandoned again.”
